Comparing Ang Kiukok two paintings

I have neglected this blog for almost a year. Too caught up with so many things. Now I hope with this new post I can do better blogging this year.

I was sorting through old books when I came across this art book by Manuel D. Duldulao entitled Contemporary Philippine Art published in 1972. Browsing through its pages I came across an art work of Ang Kiukok that closely resembles the painting he gave me and another painting made the following year. Below is the photo of the painting with the following descriptions:

And compare it with the painting below that he gave me - striking resemblance of the pattern and lines. Although I do not have a title for the art work he gave to me, but now I can consider that it is part of his geometric oeuvre.

In the same book, Ang Kiukok was given the following biographical notes:

Born in the Philippines, 1931. Graduate of the University of Santo Thomas in 1954. First one-man show at the Contemporary Arts Gallery in 1954. and 8 others since. Group shows in the Philippines, Taipei, Australia and Saigon. Chosen Outstanding Oversead Chines in Art in 1961. Represented in the collections of the National Museum, Ateneo Art Gallery, Cultural Center of the Philippines, and other public and private collections. At present devoting full time to painting.

Unrecognized Artwork by ANG KIU KOK

This painting of the ANG KIU KOK was not acquired through a public bidding, neither from an auction house. It was a gift from the PAINTER HIMSELF, ANG KIU KOK! We were friends way back in the mid '60s. When I was studying and learning how to fly at the Far Eastern Aeronautic Technology Institute.

I befriended a classmate and his name was Amor Ong Nai-Bon, who was a colleaque/associate of Ang Kiu-Kok. They both taught at Chiang Kai-Shek High School. (nowChiang Kai-Shek College.)

During those days, whenever I had free time, I would always visit them at their school. Kiu-Kok taught arts that includes painting, and Amor taught math. My classmate, Amor is indeed a genius, he spoke and wrote in 7 to 8 languages that includes Chinese, Filipino, Spanish, German and Arabic. He was so fluent in French, he got 2-Diplomas from Alliance France in Paris, 1 for teaching in Vocational schools and 1 for teaching in the universities (even before he went to study in Paris, France, he used to work with the French Embassy in Manila.)

It seems, I am writing biographies of my 2 close departed friends! Both Kiu-Kok and Amor are gentlemen of a few words! I am the one who is very talkative! Anyway, aside from being men of few words and deep thinkers, their friendship grew and they were inseparable. They both admired each others' TALENTS!

My purpose of writing this piece is to make clear how this painting came to my possession! And at the same time, to take this opportunity to relate my association with Ang Kiu-Kok and my classmate Amor; how it came about and how it lasted all those years.

During the mid-'60s, Kiu-Kok was in his mid or late 20's and I was only a teenager of 16 or 17. He was a hard working youngman, painting is not yet his profession but it was his PASSION. This painting was a gift to me by the great ANG KIU KOK himself on a very important occasion, my birthday. The Painting's medium is mixture of water color and pastel, and it is one of his very first PAINTING IN CUBISM. It was through this painting that he started to develop his works on Cubism in Oil! His early works were mostly Pen and Ink. His sketches were made to teach his pupils in the school.

This painting was done in 1968 and does not appear in his published catalogue of works.

“Many come to me to know what the future holds for their love life,” admits Julius, a Tarot and I-Ching Reader who does sessions in classy Monsoon Restaurant in Linden Suites in Ortigas for the month of February.

An architect by profession, this half-Vietnamese, half-Filipino clarifies he is no fortune-teller. He got interested in palmistry at a very young age. By the time he reache 14, he was tagged by adults, impressed by his rare talent, as the “little prophet”. His passion had earned him an invitation to join the Oa Seekers’ Cove, a Tarot-Reading and Counseling Center, that holds sessions in malls and hotels.

Some people say that in every divination there is a grain of common sense. But what about truth? Whether you believe or not, Julius shares that just by reading palms he has discovered well-guarded secrets of high-heeled women and even closet stories of the most manly men.

Julius proceeds to study both of my palms and explains that the active hand, the one used for writing, will show where you are likely headed while the inactive hand shows where you have been passive.

It’s not difficult to realize that one attraction of a reading of your future is that touch of drama. It may be through all-the way theatrics: a grim-faced, husky manghuhula with gypsy attire and a crystal ball to boot. Or it could be as subtle as how Julius takes a long look at you, then writes down your name and lights a candle to illuminate the rather dim, private corner of the restaurant.

He speaks low and puts on a concerned expression as he stops to listen when you’re in the mood to confide. I had to quip he’d make a good shrink.

Julius does palmistry and combines it with Tarot reading. He explains that palmistry, which is best done in the morning when you have not eaten anything thus making the lines clearer, is said for reading important events in your lifetime. The Tarot, on the other hand, is used to specify dates.

He points out my heart line (the one line that starts from under the Mount of mercury reaching under the index finger and the Mount of Jupiter that’s said to determine the existence of a love life or the lack there of) and sees a relationship coming in the nearest future. And before my imagination runs away with romantic illusions of a tall, dark and brooding stranger, he unwraps a silk handkerchief to draw good vibrations, and unveils a deck of crisp Tarot cards. He asks that I think of something that concerns me at the moment then cut the cards in three. The ominous card of Death reveals itself – but it doesn’t mean what you think.

“It means transformation. It means that you have to…” But I cut him short and tell him yes , there’s one thing that I wanted to transform in my life, etc., etc., - taking care of the ‘fortune-telling’ for him. Other cards cover other areas in my life , but honestly not too much crop up on love life (whatever your concerns at the time of the reading will show in the cards, he says) so I ask for a special reading. He instructs me to select four cards from the upside-down ones and, amazingly, as unexpected as an afterthought, on the fourth and final card the Lovers Card surfaces. I don’t know what it has to do with the timeline, but he says mysteriously, “In three to four months something’s going to happen…”

Julius punctuates our reading that I am still the captain of my fate – and perhaps, writer of my own love story. But for the meantime, when someone asks, I’ll know what to say: whether it would take three months or a lifetime – I know The One is coming and I don’t mind waiting.

Julius Leenon believes that fate and destiny are two different things. We cannot change our fate we can change our destiny. How? By creating a balance in our homes, in the attitudes and habits that we practice, as well as in the objects inside our houses that represent them.

Bedroom – one third of your life is spent in the bedroom, making it a vital part of the house. According to Julius, northwest is a unlucky location for 2005, however this can easily be cured by hanging a wind chime in this particular corner to reduce negative energy.

Colors – do affect our mood. Feng Shui, Green represents life, growth, and vitality; Red induces excitement and warmth; Yellow and Brown arouse feelings of security and contentment. Blue and black (water) compliment green and brown (wood), because water produces wood. Red visibly clashes with blue, but they are also considered “incompatible” because blue (water) destroys red (fire).
Plants – can speed up and slow down energy. Use different shaped plants for different effects.

Furniture – inside the bedroom can help “enhance the good life,” such as a reclining chair, a comfortable two seat sofa, and a lush bed. Living well begets living well.

Eliminate noise – invasive music, clutter. Too harsh lights, even things that remind you of work – anything that could defeat the bedroom’s purpose, which is rest.

Chi – acts like the light. Use mirrors to regulate light, in turn regulating the flow of Chi throughout the room. Bright lights stimulate Chi throughout the room. Bright light stimulate Chi, dim lights slow it down. Upward-shining lights or any form of indirect lighting can instantly uplift a room’s atmosphere.

Dear Readers I am starting a new Q&A Series here in my blog for the usual questions I am asked. These are questions I regularly encountered from clients and other seekers asking for my services. Some of these questions were also raised to me by journalist and other people interested in tarot card reading. So to start with is a question that was asked to me several years back that I would like to feature here.

Q: Is it true that women consult tarot card readers more often than men?

A: Most of my clients are 80% women. Some may consider it indecisiveness on the part of women to seek assistance from us tarot card readers but I consider it a kind of maturity. This makes women more intelligent decision maker and enlightened. After all we just read what is in their card and it is up to the seeker to follow or not what the card tells. I believe that an individual is the master of her own destiny even if the card tells something about her past, future and present.

But most often at the end of the reading my clients would thank me for the advice and the courage that I speak to them the truth, affirming the reliability of the reading and its applicability in their lives. So they make promise to deal with whatever adversity they will face and come along the way.

For my female clients, 90 % of them seek advice on love and relationship problems. About 60% are single who are in a relationship and the rest are married. Well, most of us when we are in love we tend to lose reason that we are become over powered by emotions thus we could not decide and think clearly so we need to be guided and enlightened, so that is where we tarot cards reader comes in to provide and interpret for seekers the direction shown in their cards.

My clients are equally happy with my unique and additional services that I provide them. I validate my tarot card reading with plotting their birth chart and reading their palm. So I provide them a more wholistic perspective and view of their lives.

When plotting the birth chart I take into account their birthday. But in accordance to Chinese horoscope of the four pillars which mean: year, month, day and time, the most important aspect is to know is the exact time of their birthday. Then a more accurate reading of an individual’s life could be taken into account. In a way it is like a prognosis of a person life whether she will become rich or poor, happy or unhappy.

Palm reading is another service that I provide to complement tarot reading. There are many aspect in a person’s life written on her palm such as her life span, the quality of her life (a good life or not) according to prosperity related to career, job, business, as well as relationship (how many, whether the person remains single or gets married) and even number of kids could be seen on the palm. One caution though, the lines on the palm changes over time but there are three basic lines called heaven (link with the emotional and relationship), earth (life span) and human being (career and prosperity) that are fixed. Both external and internal factors however may affect some changes in the heaven lines of the palm.

I have regular clients who come to me on a yearly basis. Although it is hard to track down the progress of my clients like any therapist you would rely allow for an individual to determine their needs for assistance in the first place they come to me on their own volition. So I give them the same freedom and does not impose on them to come back for a regular reading. It is up to them to determine when they stop or continue to come for a tarot card reading.

In my case at least 15 to 25 % come back for their yearly tarot card reading. Most tarot card readers would say a six-month period would take into effect and applicable for a reading. The months of November, December and Chinese New Year are the peak seasons when I get consulted the most.

Chuang Tzu- A Book of Wisdom on Nature

Here is a lovely story which may explain itself what Chuang Tzu
meant of Wisdom of Nature (or natural wisdom of the Great Universe)

Once upon a time a certain skilled carpenter, lets call him Master Shik, he is accompanying several of his disciples in visiting another state. On their journey they come across a very huge tree growing beside a local earth god temple, its tree trunk reaches almost half the mountain top, so high then its branches start spread out, it is ten times higher than the earth temple and its shape can accommodate thousands of cows or carabaos(water buffalo) to rest and or sleep underneath it.

Master Shik's disciples were all astounded by the strange giant tree. But Master Shik did not mind it at all not even bother to look at the tree, he just continue on with his journey without his disciples.

Not soon after his disciples catch-up on him and asked:
"Master since we were with you learning your crafts but we never have seen such a huge tree ever in our lives! Why did you not even pay a little attention to such a wonderful tree, its good quality trunk could be made into a wood craft?

The Master said: "Never mind, its just an ordinary tree-not a much useful tree for me, neither it is a quality tree as well so why waste your time looking at it?"

When evening came the master carpenter had a strange dream, he dreamt that the giant tree spoke to him saying: "During the day why were you talking a lot of nonsense to your disciples that I am a useless ordinary tree. I say you're the one who is useless and ordinary person; why don't you think carefully, if I am useful to you you would have chopped me down. How could I live up to this day and become a giant tree? If you think I am useless; I think otherwise, for me I am more useful than you." after hearing this the master carpenter was so pleased and ask for forgiveness from the tree : "I am very sorry, now I know you're a tree full of great wisdom."

Next morning Master Shik told his disciples about his dream last night. His disciples were very happy to hear it. But one of his disciples suddenly said: "Master, if the tree also considers itself useless why he had to grow along side with the temple and attract the attention of temple goers?"

The Master replied:"That is a good question, but lower your tone otherwise the tree might over hear us again... now let me tell you secretly... A useless tree should not grow anywhere at will, otherwise if he grows in the middle of a road, definitely it will be cut-down sooner or later. That's why it grows beside the temple ground. People will have a second thought, they will believe that the tree is for the temple gods to rest so nobody will dare cut it down!"

The realization is:

Useful or Useless is but a man's judgment, it is the Value of the Opposite/Contrast, in other words what is Useful to me might be Useless to you or others. Therefore the realization of wisdom should above board the Value! Chuang Tzu: " Its not that, let us go back to our original dialogue when you said: "How do you know that the fishes are happy? At that point, you already knew that I know the fishes are happy, therefore you asked me! now I can tell you How do I know why the fishes are happy? Its from the bridge that I realized it!"

Finally after a long time, I have something to post here in my blog. I have been busy with readings (thanks to those who are spreading my services by word of mouth and discovered me through forum and chat rooms), feng shui consultancy work and a small construction job that overwhelmed the owner for having cut the working days almost by half of the original work period.

So I had the time to put together this reflection of a most revered philosopher.

Chuang Tzu is a book full of great wisdom of the Universe (his nature trip in general)

I found the following 10-points can best describe the Philosophy of Chuang Tzu:

1) That man(human being) should have a realization of himself...
Why he exists? (or a Self-Realization of his own existence!)
2) That man possesses unlimited time and space will continue
to intertwine with one another on and on with nature.
3) That man must use nature to observe everything and anything
within his reach...
4) In other words man should not draw himself out of/from
another person. and
5) never through nature draw out mankind...
6) never through the unworthiness draw out the worthiness...
7) never through the past nor the future draw out the present...
8) never through death draw out life...
9) never through the unlimited universe draw out the limited universe...
10) Only when you realized and conquered your own bondage then you
can truly be free... (obtain true freedom of the self.)

A great naturist as he was, I would rather consider him as an environmentalist
in our modern time...

His followers used to compare him to Lao Tzu, as Paul to Jesus and
Plato to Socrates..

As a great lover of nature himself, he developed the doctrines of
Taoism with rigorous logic,as Gia-Fu Feng wrote about him...His fables and humor are imaginative and poetic, reflecting a brilliant and original mind. He advocated relativity with regard to all standards and values.

He is at once a mystic and a revolutionary.

The rhythm of life and its organic vision, an idea poetically implied by Lao Tzu, is brought to perfect expression in the writing of Chuang Tzu.

Chuang Tzu transcended the "Whang Cheng", the Illusory dust of the world--- thus anticipating ZEN Buddhism (I would call it Zen Nature) and therefore laying the metaphysical
foundation for a state of emptiness or ego transcendence. With imagery
and fantasy, he captures the depth of Chinese thinking....

Whereas Zen Buddhism became a school of thought contributed and benefited tremendously from Chuang Tzu deep observation of nature...

I am now integrating his profound ideology of nature with Zen nature, not Zen nature as a religion but Zen as a Science where you cultivate then suddenly you realize....

For the past several years, I have been integrating the co-relationships of my favorite 4-Fields
of study: The I-Ching, Tarot, Numerology and Astrology(Chinese and
western Zodiac)....

About Chuang Tzu:

He was a contemporary of Confucius (Kong Tzu) of the 4th and 5th
century B.C. during the Warring Period of Song Dynasty, he served as a
Lacquer Garden Official. (My belief that why he had a deep understanding of
plants in its relations to nature).

I have seen his inbox so many times and literally hundreds ang nagtetext sa kanya everyday and his phone just does not stop beeping. so it may take a while for him to respond.Our local FHM featured him in the early 2000's. He's also a one stop shop for anything you might need (crystals, feng sui items etc.)

Nagbibigay din sya ng workshops minsan. Either sya nagtuturo or mga close friends nya (depende sa specialization). at a very reasonable rate. The arts and culture community mourns the passing of acclaimed National Artist for Visual Arts Ang Kiukok, 74, who succumbed to a lingering illness Monday evening (May 9, 2005) at the St. Luke¹s Medical Center in Quezon City.

Born to immigrant Chinese parents Vicente Ang and Chin Lim, Kiukok was one of the most vital and dynamic figures who emerged during the 60s and continued to make an impact in the art scene until the time of his death.

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) described Kiukok‹named national artist in 2001‹as one of those who came at the heels of the pioneering modernists during that decade, and blazed a formal and iconographic path of his own through expressionistic works of high visual impact and compelling meaning.

³In the 70s, he crystallized in vivid, cubistic figures the terror and angst of the times. Shaped in the furnace of the political turmoil of those times, Ang Kiukok pursued an expression imbued with nationalist fervor and sociological agenda, said NCCA Executive Director and PA on Culture Cecile Guidote Alvarez, who, together with husband former Senator Heherson T. Alvarez were politically-prosecuted and fought the dictatorship during Martial Law.

Some of Kiukok's works include: Geometric Landscape (1969); Pieta, which won for him the bronze medal in the 1st International Art Exhibition held in Saigon (1962); and the Seated Figure (1979), auctioned at Sotheby's in Singapore.

His works can be found in many major art collections, among them the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), National Historical Museum of Taipei, and the National Museum in Singapore.

He was regarded as a major force in the national arts scene and the pre-eminent cultural star of the country's community of Filipino-Chinese (Tsinoys). He also crossed national boundaries, representing the Philippines in many Asian international art exhibitions from Saigon to Tokyo to Taipei, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore.

According to the book Gawad Pambansang Alagad ng Sining 2001, since the 1990s, his work has become a regular feature in the auction houses of Sotheby's and Christie's International in Singapore, as much sought after as that of another Filipino at the auction block: Fernando C. Amorsolo.

The Chinese Book of Change - The I Ching (pronounced Yee Jing) - is one of the most ancient books in existence - some of it is 3000 years old. It is not about archaic religious beliefs, nor about fortune telling, or simple tribal convictions. Rather it is a profound study of change as it occurs in human life and the universe as understood by Chinese thinkers. Within the great Chaos or the Unexpected that is a basic fact of life and the universe, there also exists the push toward Order. The interaction between these two great processes brings about patterns and cycles. These, impinging on our life we know as Change. Our life is constantly confronted by the Unexpected. The shifting events and opportunities of our life may lift us up or cast us down. The I Ching presents skilful ways of riding these currents, and surfing the waves of such changes? The I Ching does this by giving responses to questions that in their simplicity help us to clarify decisions and calm emotions in meeting our life situations or making important decisions.

Apart from being a book of wisdom in the ancient Chinese tradition, the I Ching was also consulted on questions of state, warfare and personal decision making. It is this aspect of it which is presented here. Consulting the I Ching does not present us with statements of what will happen as a fated future. The wisdom behind the book does not see the future as unalterably fixed, but rather like a constantly shifting flux similar to the seasons, with which we can interact. Great and simple men and women have consulted the I Ching over the centuries. Carl Jung, the great Swiss Psychiatrist, not only wrote the forward to the first European translation, but also used it in his work. Statesmen and lay people have found in it advice on meeting the ever changing faces of opportunity and adversity. It is a magnificent aid to clarifying ones goals or seeing a different viewpoint of the situation, no matter whether it is business or romance we are dealing with. It can be a simple wise guide to whether today is the right time to ask the important question, seek love, or make the business move. The response we get is often astounding, mentioning our problem as if it were known. This new interpretation in modern concepts and language opens the I Ching for everyone's consultation.

Consulting The Oracle

The very beginning of consulting the oracle of the I Ching is to define a question. This should be with one single issue in mind, and not be several questions in one. So it might be a question like - ‘What should I guard against in this issue?’ - ‘Which direction should I take?’ - “What sort of relationship can I expect from my new lover?’

An example of how not to frame a question by asking several questions in one would be - ‘Will the relationship with my new boyfriend work, or if not should I go back to my husband, or should I simply concentrate on my job?’

The traditional manner of consulting the I Ching was to throw a bundle of yarrow sticks. This was a very long and ritualistic process, and the modern equivalent is to use three coins. The coins are thrown six times. Each throw, through its combination of odd or even sides - head or tails - yields a particular result, called a LINE. The line can either be an unbroken horizontal line, or a horizontal line with a break in the centre.

This gives a yes or no, negative or positive response. The unbroken line representing a yes, and the broken a negative or no. But with the addition of further lines these basic receptive or active lines create a variety of possible responses.

The lines build from the bottom up to form a Hexagram, which is a mixture of broken

and unbroken lines, such as this -

There are sixty-four possible configurations of the hexagrams, and each hexagram represents a process in nature or human nature - such as growth, discharge, or ending.

Some throws (details explained later) create what is called a Moving or Changing Line. This means that although, for example, an unbroken line is indicated, the line will transform into a broken line. What happens is that although one ends with a particular hexagram made up of whatever the original lines indicated happen to be, a second or transformed hexagram can also be created in some consultations.

Therefore, if lines two and three (starting from the bottom) of the above hexagram were changing lines, the transformed hexagram would look like this.

When the hexagram has no moving lines, the response to the query is the text connected with the one hexagram. If the response to the query has a hexagram with changing lines, then the original hexagram is consulted, and added to this comes the text for the changing lines AND the transformed hexagram. The moving line comments and transformed hexagram are seen as qualifications to the original hexagram or a summing up of the situation. This can be thought of as something like the first hexagram saying ‘Yes this has excellent possibilities’ - then the moving lines and transformed hexagram might add ‘But be careful of making any big changes at the moment, as it is good only for building up what already exists.’ Richard Wilhelm who did one of the first European translations says that the transformed hexagram is the final situation portrayed by the response.

Technical Information

Three coins are thrown six times. Each throw generates one line in the hexagram starting from the bottom and working upwards.

Traditionally the coins used were the Chinese coins with a hole in the centre, marked on one side and blank on the other. The marked side is considered as ‘heads’ or positive, and the blank side as ‘tails’ or negative.

Each ‘heads’ counts as two - each ‘tails’ counts as three. The total is then added to give a score. So three coins each landing as ‘heads’ would give a score of six. Three coins landing as ‘tails’ would give a score of nine. One coin landing as ‘heads’ and the other two coins landing as ‘tails’, gives a score of eight.

Any even score, such as 6 or 8, gives a broken line. Any score that is odd such as 7 or 9, gives an unbroken line.

Lastly - any score of 6 or 9 gives what is called a changing or moving line also, as explained above.

2 heads and 1 tail = 7 a firm line (Unbroken line) that does not change.

Whatever the response, one can explore the question further by shifting the framing of the question - in other words try out different approaches to the problem or situation involved in the question. Therefore the I Ching offers a system that enables you to clarify your approach to your question - whether that is about a relationship, a business venture, or even your personal growth. This is a wonderful means of defining decisions, and thinking out the finer points of any situation. For in the end, the responses from the I Ching act as a stimulus to your own thoughts and feelings. In some issues you need to consult the oracle of the I Ching a number of times to clarify what is the most rewarding direction. This is like having a conversation in which you defines an issue by asking further questions.

So, if you asked a question such as – “Can I go ahead with this project in the city of Boston?” The response might be that there would be a lot of resistance to ones business. Therefore one could ask if the business project could go well in another city, or with a different set of parameters.

1. What is Tarot?

Tarot is a deck of (78) cards, a number of games played with the deck, and a number of metaphysical beliefs and practices attached to the non-gaming use and contemplation of the deck. Tarot was invented as a card game in the early-mid 15th century, most likely by the nobility of north Italian city states. In 1781 two small essays written by a Swiss-born French philosophe and a French cavalry officer provided the basis for all future development of what has come to be known as occult Tarot. Prior to this time little public discussion had occurred concerning the use of Tarot for divination, although much had been written (both for and against the practice) for almost three centuries prior to 1781 about the use of playing cards in divination. The extension of this tradition to Tarot was a natural one, and the main question is when precisely it took place.

2. What does the name Tarot mean, and where did it originate?

It is generally claimed (even by playing-card historians) that no one knows with certainty what the name Tarot means. There are many theories, most connected in some way to hysterical claims about the origin of the deck. The main thing to remember is that Tarot was originally called Trionfi (carte da trionfi—cards with triumphs), the Italian word for Triumphs, or trumps, and referred specifically to the twenty-two trump cards added to the already existing standard playing-card deck of fifty-six cards (this had been imported into Europe from Moslem Egypt in the 14th-century) that enabled one to play the card game of Trionfi. Eventually the Italians started calling the deck and game Tarocchi (tar-ok-kee), and again it is generally believed no one knows for certain why the change occurred nor what exactly Tarocchi means. When the deck entered France, sometime around the turn of the 16th century, the French shortened the Italian name to Tarot, the name by which the deck is known to the English-speaking world. 4. What is the history of Tarot?—deck evolution/timeline

Tarot 's history is at the heart (and sometimes the mind) of the considerable hysteria surrounding the entire subject of Tarot. This question is both easily and never answered, because to answer it thoroughly and accurately would be to answer it without prejudice or agenda, and no one seems able to do that or to even come close. For example, Tarot was invented in Italy, not in ancient Egypt as the occultists have claimed. That's a fact. However, an important part of Tarot, the biggest portion of the cards in fact, are closely based on a deck imported into Europe from—Egypt! Not ancient Egypt of course, but Mamluk Egypt. Uh-oh, what's that or them? And you can see the problem. The history of Tarot is unbelievably complicated, yet on the surface the facts seem simple and clear. One thing you learn studying Tarot, and its continuing history. Very little about it is reliably or steadfastly simple and clear.

5. What are the symbolic roots of Tarot?

If all you ever read were occultist or pomo Tarot books that claim to answer this question, you'd just keep chanting to yourself—twenty-two, twenty-two, twenty-two, all the way up to six-sixty-six (actually, up to six-hundred sixty—oh well). The fact and the curse that the deck just happens to have an important structural division of twenty-two parts has parked the car of hysteria securely in the Tarot lot. Why is twenty-two a big deal? There are twenty-two letters in the Hebrew alphabet of course, and that's the basis for the considerable mystical mulch that makes up Kabbalah, and Kabbalah has been the symbolic wellspring for just about every occultist idea people have layered onto the old gaming deck of Tarot. And while in a very dry and factual way this seems pretty silly and falsely established and promoted, even from an historical (not just hysterical) point of view, it might not be too ridiculous to make Tarot a Kabbalistic stepchild.

6. What books should I read to get started or to learn more about Tarot?

I can wholeheartedly (and wholebrainedly) say, since I'm both the author of this FAQ, and the book I'm recommending above all others to you, that if you were to read just ONE book about Tarot, it should be Rhapsodies of the Bizarre. It's not a very large book, and so can't possibly claim to be the most thorough treatment of Tarot, the game or deck of cards. No, that honor and tedium goes to Michael Dummett's bloated and seldom read 1980 The Game of Tarot. Nor is it a super-spooky occultist cosmograph, like Aleister Crowley's excellent The Book of Thoth, although contained within Rhapsodies' pages is the source for every occult-Tarot cosmograph ever written, including The Book of Thoth. The reason you need to read Rhapsodies of the Bizarre, first and foremost and forever, is that it alone will tell you the unvarnished truth about Tarot and the peculiar planet you think you want to visit (or even move to)—Tarotmania.

7. What do the cards mean, if anything?

OK, before we start, let me make an important distinction, that escapes many people as they're learning Tarot and which stays out of their reach till I have to explain it to them—there are two basic kinds of meanings in Tarot:

1. Symbolic meanings (what the symbols on the cards mean individually and as a collective symbol).

2. Divinational meanings (what the cards mean, or how they are read, in fortune-telling).

Because of the way fortune-telling and Tarot dogma developed, being initially different traditions which were fused together by occultists, the two kinds of meanings are often seemingly different and confusingly so. So, if you've already encountered this, that's not just you being stupid—it's a real effect and a real problem, until you've dug a little deeper into what's going on.

8. How do I use a Tarot deck to tell the future'? (includes Keltic Cross explanation)

Oh come now, if people could use Tarot cards to tell the future, they'd be doing it, and if they'd be doing it they'd be running the world, not telling you about it. AND, you sure as hell wouldn't reasonably expect to find out how to do it in some Internet FAQ, now would you? But who said Tarot was reasonable? Well, it can be, but that's another question and answer.

So, I'll tell you what I'll do. I'll tell you how to use a Tarot deck to tell the future. And then I'll tell you how to use a Tarot deck to build a house of cards. And you'll know as much about the future from using your cards to do either of these things.

But, that's not good enough for you, is it? You want to know the future, and you want to use playing cards to look it up. And you demand to be shown how to do it. OK. Just remember you made me do this.

9. What are 'reversals' and how do I get them into my readings?

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away (called France) this guy named Etteilla, a wouldbe occultist and a surewas scam artist, decided to do card readings with something called a Piquet deck (32 cards, plus, for purposes of reading, a blank card, which our hero modestly named the Etteilla). Etteilla provided TWO different meanings for these cards, one for the normal (or upright) card, and one for when the card would be turned upside-down (that is, with the top inverted to the bottom). The idea was that a card would have both a native divinational meaning or meanings, and also meanings that would reflect a degrading or lessening or reversing of these inherent or natural indications. It is remarkable that people have difficulty getting reversed cards to appear, magically or otherwise, into their decks and readings, but they often do have a problem with this.

10. What's the difference between "reversed cards" and "elemental dignities"?

When you reverse (or Etteilla) a card, you are attempting to supply your deck with some possible alternative meanings, that is, something different from the norm. With reversed cards, what you are going to get is pretty much of an either-or situation, although there are usually several different meanings for both the upright and reversed position. However, there is another way of generating these alternative meanings that does not use reversed positions or meanings at all, and that is a system called elemental dignities, which seeks to analyze a series of cards based on their elemental relationships to each other, and therefore, ALL readings using this method should provide opportunities, without recourse to manual inversions of the cards, to get sometimes very subtle ranges of meaning with all the cards.

11. Can I read my own cards?

Simple answer: YES!

Ignore people who tell you that you'll be too prejudiced to read clearly, or that the energies won't be right or whatever the excuse is supposed to be. You CAN read cards for yourself.

Of course, you're advised to READ the cards, and not merely force them to say what you want, but that advice applies regardless of whether you are reading for yourself or someone else.

12. How is Tarot related to other forms of divination?

The best evidence indicates that fortune-telling with playing cards began quite early, and was adapted to existing systems of divination, such as those used with another popular gambling tool, dice. As cards replaced dice as the game of choice amongst players of jeux de hasard (games of chance), one sees how cards would also come to replace dice as the divinational tool of choice. Indeed, playing cards and dice were seen by 16th- and 17th-century clergy as divinational tools, even in their application for games, since the chance part of the equation implied a divine involvement or an attempt by the gambler to rely upon or invoke this involvement. Fortuna was, after all, a pagan deity. After the occultist adoption of Tarot, some specific similarities between Tarot and astrology were introduced, particularly in the way some systems of Tarot divination are performed. Also, given a certain creativity in the formulation of layouts, Tarot can be made to simulate the superficial structures of all kinds of other systems. For example, one of the most popular reading layouts is the Astrological or Zodiac spread, where each position represents either a sign of the zodiac or a house of a horoscope.

13. How do I use a Tarot deck for contemplation?

Contemplation first involves a preparation and this is largely a mental exercise with Tarot. Fill your mind with as many facts (and thoughts and feelings about the facts as you can)—in other words, learn what the cards mean. In the beginning you will not know much, but that's OK, the more you learn about Tarot, the more productive the contemplation becomes.

When the preparation is done, then you will be ready to exercise this knowledge in myriad forms of contemplation or meditation, which doesn't necessarily take any particular form or function—life is a meditation in this view. However, if you wish to formalize your experience, you can find many guides to teaching you proper breathing and postures by looking to books, newsgroups and websites devoted to yoga.

14. How do I use a Tarot deck to play a game?

Many games have been invented to play with Tarot or Tarocchi. Tarot cards were almost certainly created to play games, not to read fortunes or to represent occult philosophies, so it is with the games of Tarot that one is really using the deck in its oldest and (some would say) purest application.

Numerous variations exist, mostly bridge-like games involving trick-taking.

15. What about computer Tarot programs?

Well there are some, but one question that frequently comes up concerning computer Tarot is—does it really work?

The answer is no more approachable than is the similar question for Tarot in general. People who tend to distrust computers and technology seem to think that only a human-spirit link can power the Tarot (reading) mechanism. On the other hand, some computer programmers, especially ones who pain themselves about the creation of some perfect randomizing agent (algorithm), also refuse to believe that a computer-generated reading could be as natural as that conducted by a human. This latter concern raises an interesting philosophical point, is the randomization of the cards what we are actually trying to achieve by shuffling? In fact, statistically, most people are not sufficiently skilled shufflers to easily produce a randomized deck, or at least one whose order is greatly changed from the starting one. People clump cards together, shuffle only two or three times, and generally make it pretty likely that they'll reproduce card sequences in their readings—something which has happened to most readers and which is generally seen, without any scientific justification, as quite significant. At least in computer readings, you don't have to worry about all that, some machine, or some software, will shuffle for you. And, in my experience, most online readings are about as useful as most human ones, which is not really a positive comment about computer readings so much as a negative one concerning the reading abilities of most people who tell fortunes with cards.

16. What about those extra 'Magi' in the Thoth Deck?

You know, a lot of things about pomotarot, and the postmodern world of Tarot, are pretty damned stupid. And this is a classic example of one of those things. In fact, this is SO stupid, even the people who think they know what I'm talking about here are about to get quite a shock because—it's even stupider than initiates know.

So, here, for the first time in hystery, is the whole dumb tale of the Thoth Three Magi.

17. What are the ethics, if any, of reading cards?

Well, first of all, we'd better answer the question—What are ethics? After we do that, as simply as we can for starters, we can then consider this question with respect to what is done, and perhaps what shouldn't be done, with Tarot. A set of ethics, particular to a group, is a system of rules governing behavior. It doesn't necessarily have to evoke or recommend moral behavior, at least not in any metaphysical sense, but it does provide a structure for how to behave in a limited human application of morality. In other words, one hopes to use the ethics of a class of humans, in this case card readers, to both better understand the moral assumptions of that class (what they view as good and bad), and at the same time perhaps to mimic that behavior as a way of initiating oneself into the class. Well, that's the theory, and you can already tell, by the drooping of your eyelids, that it's not really a subject that's of much interest to your average fortune-teller. But it is an interesting question, and answer (or discussion). And as you know, if you're interested in more detail—

18. Are telepsychics REALLY reading Tarot, or just credit-card numbers?

If you've been keeping up with recent events on this matter of the legitimacy of telepsychics, and particularly the Tarot-reading kind, such as Miss Cleo (does anyone remember her?), you'll know that the legal answer to this question has pretty much uniformly been that telepsychics are frauds and con artists, ONLY concerned about taking money from sadly desperate marks. The problem a lot of people who make a living reading cards have with that answer is that they feel Miss Cleo's (and her bosses') obvious scamming of victims is not a fair reflection of what the average card reader does, even of the ones working as day-trippers for the big scams.

19. What is cold reading?

Have you ever been walking down the street and you saw a person in ragged dirty clothing pushing a shopping cart filled with what appeared to be his personal possessions? And when you saw that person, you came to some conclusion about who (or even what) he was. You did that without reading Tarot cards, without looking at his bank account, without needing to ask him a single thing about his life. You cold read him and concluded, most likely correctly, that he was a homeless person. That doesn't make you a psychic, and it certainly doesn't make you a Tarot reader. It does mean you possess at least an average bit of perception and the ability to discriminate between (not necessarily against) different states of human existence. A good cold reader can take that ability to perceive or coldly read the passive indicators of a human condition and they can make it look like fortune-telling. All the better is this effect promoted or perpetrated if they also happen to be plying this trade with a pack of Tarot cards.

20, What does "Death" REALLY mean?—OR, I just got the Death card, should I go ahead and pay for my funeral expenses?

Death is death. Get it? You will. Now, the answer to this question provides perhaps the clearest illustration of a Tarotic rule: simple answers inevitably veil more complex indications. But, if you're counting on that to get you out of Death, or death, you're out of luck, or rather utterly into luck, which doesn't necessarily mean good luck, does it? The thing is life itself is a series of infinite deaths, infinitely discrete stops or terminations where a mood, a thought, a love or a hate, or a memory, cherished or otherwise—or a life—expires. A breath is a death. And then there is the final breath, the whispered clarion of death. So, death is the fundamental requirement for life, and the meaningful experience of it. Everything we think, do, or care anything about is framed by death, and our sentence of death. It is almost as if life is but an ornament or fruit of death, the peculiarly glittering human stars briefly budding the black tree of death. So, you see, you didn't just get the Death card.

21. Can I (and should I) design my own Tarot deck?

Can you? Sure. While you at it, go design (or doodle) a starship, or a nuclear reactor, or paint the 21st-century Mona Lisa, or write a great novel or just do something really useful with yourself and cure cancer. Because, if you're just starting out with Tarot, or if you've only been at it using the blind-alley affirmation method, you don't have a clue about what you're doing or what Tarot is about. Isn't that correct? So, why do you figure you'd be any good at designing an example of something you know little or nothing about? But, lots of people do figure just that, aiming to reach the heights by expressing the depths of arrogance and absurdity. And they inevitably end up with muck that only vaguely makes sense even to them. The greatest Tarot deck ever designed, the Thoth deck of Aleister Crowley, was the culmination of a long and interesting life spent absorbing and processing huge amounts of symbolic data. Now, that's what we all do of course, process symbolic data. It's just that some of us are artists at it, and those people not only can but SHOULD make Tarot decks (and that doesn't require a pack of cards), and some of us can't process our way out of a wet paper bag, and those people should spectate (not speculate).

22. What are some online resources I can use to learn more about Tarot?

Well, lucky you, you're already at the best place to do that. And to learn more about Tarot is often to learn things which don't necessarily seem to be about Tarot at all. For example, the oldest Tarots incorporate motifs that have their origins in Renaissance Italian themes of the rebirth of Roman Imperial virtues (and domination) as screened through a Biblical, or even Apocalyptic, filter. So, to truly understand Tarot, you will find yourself needing to study such varied subjects as Roman triumphs and psychomachias and the Biblical mysteria of the Revelation of St. John the Evangelist. Some of you who come to Tarotic studies, or Tarot fortune-telling, hoping to escape the long arm of the Bible and it ministers of shouldn'a-ought'a, are completely out of luck (there's that word again). Tarot is of the Bible, illustrates Biblical themes, and finally permeates Tarotic dogma, which is of course Christian (though sometimes gnostically so) in foundation and expression. Even the darker expressions of Tarot are expressions in (or contra) a Christian context. Aside from these dark and musty vaults of Tarotic archives, there's a living breathing Tarot evolving right before our postmodern eyes, and the web is full of examples of these many derivative species of the old book.

23. Are there alternate Tarot FAQs, ones that will better support my own ignorant feelings?

What—you worry? Perish that bad feeling, dude! Of course there are alternatives to this list of skeptical, sarcastic semantics. And some of them are not only amusingly dim and dense, but are good examples of the promotion of Tarotic-demonic dogma, wherein Tarot, the traditional Devil's Picturebook, is denounced by other religious kooks, i.e. the ones still reading fortunes out of the Bible instead of Tarot, as yet another indication that Satan rules, baby!—well, at least till the AntiSatan comes (back). Marcel Leenon or Julius as his friends call him, is particularly adept in I-Ching, the Chinese tradition of divination based on the Book of Changes that dates 5,000 years ago. The wisdom of this ancient book is the inspiration of his spiritual maturity, honed by over 20 years of study.

For Julius, the I-Ching is not only designed to simply predict the future. It is also a diagnostic tool to clarify one's situation and state of mind, enabling a person to acquire a better understanding of where one is, and where one should go.
